The University of British Columbia (UBC) occupies 400 hectares on the western coast of Vancouver and is consistently ranked among the top 40 universities worldwide. With 58,000 students from 140 countries, UBC is a globally minded research university.

UBC has identified sustainability and research excellence as two of its core strategic priorities, and to support these priorities the University developed the innovative Campus as a Living Laboratory program, transforming the campus into a municipal-sized test bed for sustainable technologies. The UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering Department participates in the Campus as a Living Laboratory program, using the university’s physical infrastructure to test power generation and storage technologies, with a focus on smart grids and alternative energy.
